about

I had been reading a book about the direct aftermath of World War 2. It was just too dark, and I couldn't finish it. But I was struck by the way that the force and violence of the war, it's inertia, kept going, leaving people floating on different trajectories. For some people the aftermath was even more dangerous than the main event, for others it represented the main chance; identities and borders and histories were suddenly up for grabs. The song represents a character who is caught in this treacherous, morally ambiguous stream.

lyrics

After the war
When the silence came
we weren't sure
What to do with ourselves
All of the parts
Lying at our feet
All of the people
running in the street

Sun lies lazy
On the patio
2 o’clock falls
Silent as the snow – back home
Maybe I’ll sleep
Again someday
Maybe I’ll walk
With my head held high – when they come

Sometimes things just fall
of their own volition
Sometimes things get lost
somewhere in translation
the year that never was
lost to retribution
walking with the ghosts
they make the best companions
these days

maybe I was never here
You were never there
